.
My long-term artistic project IN CONVERSATION WITH MARCUS is an ongoing dialogue with a fictional figure named Marcus, that I invented going trhough tough period of my life.
With him we talk about memory, absence, time, solitude etc.
The project operates across painting, photography, text, music, sound installation, and film.

My approach to documentary photography grows out of a poetic, autobiographical tradition shaped by artists such as Francesca Woodman, Sophie Calle, Christopher Anderson (especially Son, Pia), Elina Brotherus, and Robert Frank, where intimacy, subjectivity, and lived experience are central.
I am interested in documentary photography not as factual reporting, but as a quiet, long-term, ethical form of observation at the edge of documentary and art — a visual diary where the personal, the psychological, and the historical coexist.

Val: Loneliness feels endless.
Marcus: That’s because it bends time.
Val: Into what?
Marcus: Into a mirror, so you see yourself.
Marcus: Do you remember it exactly?
Val: I don’t remember - I feel it.
Marcus: Then maybe it never really happened?
Val: Then why does it still hurt?

Where depth can breathe. It is all about a quiet chronicle - an attempt to preserve what memory cannot hold.
A diary where image, sound, and word converge to grasp the fleeting, the fragile, the deeply felt.

Auschwitz PROJECT
unfolds within the Marcus prooject
This project began with a gift - a book titled Poems from Auschwitz. After reading it, I started composing choral music using texts from the book. At the same time, I was taking a short course in documentary photography and decided to travel to Auschwitz at the beginning of 2026 to work with landscape and architecture - the geometry of power, control, and a place where an immense tragedy occurred and continues to resonate.
The project is conceived as multidisciplinary, involving photography, music, and possibly painting. One part of the project I want to develop together with children.

My goal for the next 3–6 months
is to prepare my first photobook based on the long-term project In Conversation with Marcus, bringing together self-portraits, landscapes, texts, and diary fragments into a cohesive narrative.
1. I plan to submit this photobook to the First PhotoBook - Aperture Photobook Award - sept 2026
2. Hasselblad Photobook Award - april may 2026
3. Photobook Award Kassel - Dummy Phtoobbok - feb may 2026
4. Hasselblad Masters Award in Portrait, Landscape, Art - present photographs from the same body of work - fev 2026
5. Yancey Richardson Gallery - to send portfolio
Maybe it was too much)
I can explain everything.
See you soon

Best regards,
Val Giamo
